 Thoughts On P90 Pickups & Humbucker Comparisons | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 54:51

We take a gentle stroll down the path of P90 pickups. We found ourselves in the lucky position of having a bunch of wonderful P90-equipped guitars at our disposal, so what better excuse to plug ’em in and have a listen next to some similar guitars that use humbuckers. This audio is taken from our YouTube video, Friday 27 April 2018, https://youtu.be/KZUobUDVAD0 As always with us, this isn’t a scientific comparison, and yes the guitars have some significant differences. Regular viewers will know that we’re more interested in the variables than the similarities… because that’s real life! We plug in all kinds of guitars with different levels of gain and have a listen. Simple as that – please enjoy the episode…   Pedals in this episode… • TheGigRig Three2Onehttp://bit.ly/2fW8XJP • D’Addario Pedal TunerUK & Europe: http://bit.ly/2tIN4lDUSA: http://bit.ly/2x4Bm6mAustralia: http://bit.ly/2tfHqHN • Emanating Fist Electronics Dope PriestTry Facebook?  Pick'N'Mix – Laney LA30BL, Supro Tremolo, ZVEX BOR, Wampler Reflection, BCC Iommi TI Boost | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 41:30

This is Dan’N’Mick’s Pick’N’Mix where we feature four (or five) pedals (and amps) that are new (to us anyway). Our agenda is purely to plug them in, see what cool sounds and features we find, and combine them in whatever way inspires. That’s it! This episode first aired as a YouTube video, 10 April 2018. https://youtu.be/97TShWATTDk There’s a strong Laney theme in this episode, not least because the splendid people there offered us a first look at the new-for-2018 LA30BL. Dan got all fizzy about this when we saw it at NAMM back in January 2018. And it would be entirely rude to play it without the Black Country Customs TI Booster, right? But the fun doesn’t stop there. ZVEX’s Box Of Rock is beloved of so many people. A so-say ‘JTM45 in a box’, it’s high time it got an airing on TPS. We’re also a-wobblin’ and a-shimmerin’ thanks to Supro’s Tremolo – with the all-important Harmonic mode – and the new Reflection Reverb from Wampler.  Which 15W Amp? Fender Blues Jr, Vox AC15 & Fender Bassbreaker 15 | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 01:17:08

We take a detailed look at the three most popular 15-watt 1x12 valve combo amps currently on the market: Vox AC15, Fender Blues Junior and Fender Bluesbreaker 15. This episode originally aired 29 December 2017 as a video on our You Tube channel. https://youtu.be/BNgaIfhkdAc Some of this won't make sense because this was originally a video... people are asking us for podacasts of the audio and we're obliging!  We feature all of these amps on the show from time to time… and are subsequently asked to compare them. So sit back, grab yourself a refreshing beverage and join us as we get into it. This is a long one because there’s a lot of ground to cover and – as regular viewers will know by now – short and snappy isn’t really our style.  Five Modern Fuzz Pedals – ZVex, Thorpy, ProAnalog & Wampler | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 52:19

We follow up from our recent adventures in vintage-style fuzzes with some slightly more modern excursions around the fantabulous fields of fuzz. This episode first aired Jan 5 2018 as a YouTube video, https://youtu.be/UKiSj-2Vc5w This is the audio from that video so some of this might not make absolute sense without the visuals!  Now clearly this is a product sector absolutely awash with wacky, weird and wonderful devices from a plethora of makers, be they individuals or multinational corporations. So how on Earth do you just pick five? Well, you just pick five, get on with it and wait for the deluge of comments from people wishing you’d chosen something different. If that sounds like you, consider this as Part 1 with more to follow in time, based on your helpful suggestions. For everybody else, we hope this provides a little context to some of the other options out there to a strictly vintage-style fuzz and encourages you down the path of the seismic square wave. Swathe yourself amid blankets of woolly warmth, or perhaps splutter forth with grainy, gated aggression. Who doesn’t love a bit of the ol’ fuzzy goodness, eh?  Five Spring Reverb Pedals & A Fender Super Reverb Amp | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 49:45

The Story Of Mick's Two-Rock Classic Reverb Signature | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 16:28

Mick talks about – and plays – his Two-Rock Classic Reverb Signature. He got the amp part way through 2017 following a very long journey, much soul searching and a little bit of luck here and there!  Big Amp Small Amp, Volume, Tone & Feel | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 01:01:16

We take a loose wander through one of the very most important – and yet confusing – topics in electronical guitaralisation: the interdependence of volume, tone and feel. Moreover, the difference between what you hear and feel in the room while playing… and what ends up hitting the recorder. This episode first aired on YouTube, March 16 2018 https://youtu.be/gmBkcTicyKQ No single video or podcast could ever hope to address the whole topic, but spurred on by a conversation that Mick had with the venerable Michael Landau just recently, a theme emerged for a discussion and we decided to run with it. We started in one place, veered to various others and hopefully passed via a few illuminative rest points along the way: quintessential TPS. If you’re hoping to garner some solid how-to information, this really isn’t the video for you. It’s one of those ‘leading to better questions’ voyages on which we so often find The Good Ship TPS. There are elements of this podcast that won't make much sense at all as we have a dB meter going in the video version and a lot of on-screen graphics. If you are confused why the amps sometimes sound the same volume through the headphones, despite a 30dB difference on the dB meter… It’s because we vary the input gain of the microphone to the recorder. The in-room experience is //radically// different between the quiet and loud sounds, but we have no real way of demonstrating that other than by trying to explain it in words and reactions. It’s another reminder of why you can’t really trust video demos of products for a definitive idea of what they sound like. Because microphones are not your ears and gut... and they never will be. Please enjoy the episode – we hope it encourages you to ask new and better questions. Or indeed confirms what you already know. Either is fine with us!  Kirk Fletcher Pedalboard Rebuild | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 01:03:05

We welcome the fantabulous Kirk Fletcher to That Pedal Shed. Kirk is a supremely talented solo artist, sideman and all-round wonderful human being from Los Angeles, California. But heavens, he is in dire need of a pedalboard upgrade! This episode first aired on YouTube January 12 2018.  https://youtu.be/540MVIzeJUE We start by having a look at the pedals Kirk is currently using, before Dan gets it into a bit more order by replacing the power solution and putting it all on a small board with a QMX8 loop switcher by TheGigRig.If you want to see more detail about how Dan approaches board builds, power and so on, please check the Matt Schofield board build video here: https://youtu.be/sgxJZu6LgLM and Mick’s pedalboard build here: https://youtu.be/-wpAnCeHPQs The techniques and processes are all the same. We then move on to a bit of Kirk’s background and playing history, before coming back to the board and experimenting a little more. Please check out Kirk’s music by visiting his website http://kirkfletcherband.com/His 2010 solo album is called ‘My Turn’ - available at all decent sources online - and there is a new album on its way in 2018!  Matt Schofield: Tone, Technique, Amps & Pedals | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 01:05:12

We’re honoured to get a visit from our good friend, Matt Schofield. Matt is an astonishingly good blues-based player from the UK who we’ve known for many years. This first aired as a video on our YouTube Channel, July 14 2017. https://youtu.be/shAtnDUXGlQ These days Matt spends most of his time in the US, never ceasing to astound fans and audiences with his incredible touch, tone and sophisticated approach to blues guitar.During this pedcast we ask Matt about his approach to guitar tone, his technique and all that other fun stuff that goes hand-in-hand with it. Matt brought along his pedalboard, his SVL 61 guitar and of course his signature Two-Rock amplifier, leaving us somewhat stunned – there’s some killer playing, but also some really good general advice on tone and approach in this video. Enjoy the episode! FOR MORE ON MATT PLEASE VISIT http://www.mattschofield.com/ A NOTE ON NOISE AND HUM…For this episode, Matt had his Two-Rock at proper gig levels. It is a phenomenal sonic and physical experience (which bizarrely never sounded painful or unpleasant) that’s all part and parcel of his tone. As a result, there is more hum and extraneous noise than normal (Dan is currently building Matt a new board to help with that, but that’s another story). The important thing to say is that we use NO hum reduction software or anything of the kind. What you’re hearing is the vocal mic (gained very high to pick up the voices, plus plenty of compression) get faded up and down as Matt speaks. It gives an accentuated impression of the hum, even though it was pretty loud in our little room. When the amp mics are on, we use NO hum reduction, it’s just that the mic on the cab is gained so much lower than our voice mic, so the hum doesn’t seem anywhere near as loud. Hope that makes sense.  Joey Landreth & Harmonic Tremolo | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 42:34

We take a fun journey through vintage harmonic tremolo with our great friend Joey Landreth. This episode first aired on our YouTube channel 11 August 2017. https://youtu.be/FDRHDy9GI-M Along the way we take in a couple of cool new OD/fuzz pedals on Joey's new board too. If you don’t know who he is, head to iTunes/Spotify/wherever right now! Or www.joeylandreth.com The harmonic tremolo effect featured in a handful of Fender amps from the early/mid sixties. It differs from ‘normal’ amplitude-varying tremolo in that different frequencies of signal are modulated in slightly different ways. It gives a slightly more modulated, almost swirling sound that you can hear put to incredible effect in this episode. To whit, we compare the in-built harmonic trem from a genuine 1960 Fender Super with a Walrus Audio Monument pedal version as an intro to the whole deal. Also in this episode is a lovely 1966 Fender Twin, but we swap that out for a Victory V40 Deluxe and get some crazy dual-tremolo action going (we couldn’t turn the Twin’s tremolo on properly – arrrghhh!). MASSIVE thanks to Jack at Origin Effects for bringing the old amps along. MASSIVE thanks to Joey Landreth for being Joey Landreth. We also would like to send some MASSIVE thanks to Tom Waterman from Universal Audio, for help with our continuing experiments to sound better, here courtesy of an Apollo 8p interface running some Neve and SSL channel amplifier/strip plug ins.  Graham Coxon On Life, Music, Gear & Inspiration | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 01:02:11

In this episode we welcome the wonderful, enigmatic and popular-music-changing Graham Coxon to the show. This first aired March 9 2018. https://youtu.be/_ijyk89uOCI Graham is a founding member of legendary British band, Blur who reigned alongside Oasis at the top of the 1990s Britpop scene. They’ve sold millions of records and go down as one of the most famous and successful British bands ever. Graham also has a successful solo career and he does soundtracks too. Coxon’s unorthodox, visceral approach to guitar and music is influenced by – and continues to influence – a long line of alternative players who eschew a traditional scales-and-‘correct’-technique approach in favour simply whatever works best in the context of the music. Quite a bit of this video centres around that whole discussion as it unfolds into a fascinating and inspiring insight into what's going on inside his head. Recollections of a few classic Blur guitar moments are the icing on the cake. Please note that there’s not a huge amount of playing in this video. That Pedal Shed is entirely out of context with Graham’s usual worlds of all-encompassing live performance, immersive songwriting and in-the-moment recording. He is a true artist and we thank him warmly for his insight and candour… and of course his colossal contribution to British music. We asked Graham if he’d like to plug any current activity. He’s way too modest for all of that, so please check out www.grahamcoxon.co.uk and sign up to his newsletter to find out what’s going on in his world.  Introduction To MIDI For Guitar Pedals | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: 56:04

We delve into the near-limitless possibilities that MIDI brings to the guitar pedal world. This episode was first published on YouTube 20 April 2018. https://youtu.be/LfTwFIiEUUc This is simply the audio from the show - we've been asked a lot for a podcast version!  It’s a big subject with a tremendous number of potential applications, so we start from the beginning and explain the three basic functionality benefits that MIDI offers to pedal users. They are PCM (patch/program change messages), CC (continuous control) and MIDI Clock. The upshot is that if you have MIDI-enabled pedals and some form of MIDI controller you can access a vast number of patch and parameter changes across multiple devices with one single footswitch press. Please note that this video is focussed on the kind of pedals we use – high quality stompboxes, preferably with as much analogue signal path as possible. Regular viewers will know that we’re not into digital multi FX, rack gear or digital modelling amps/processors. They can all benefit from MIDI control as well of course, but we don't deal with them here.
