Pop Psych 101 show

Pop Psych 101

Summary: In an effort to educate and normalize, two therapists, Ryan Engelstad and Hayley Roberts, talk candidly about mental health and illness through the lens of movies, music, books, and TV. Common pop culture mental health tropes are analyzed, and the accuracy of their portrayals are in question, for better or worse. PopPsych can be raw and real, and very serious; it can also be very funny. If we really want to normalize the conversation about mental health, then we need to start having real and normal conversations.  #29 - Finding Your Voice in Speak: The Graphic Novel | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:59:13

Ryan and Mike acknowledge some of the feedback they received about last week's episode on Autism. For this episode on Speak, they look at the graphic novel's intense portrayal of a rape survivor's story. Both Ryan and Mike are deeply affected by this moving and real story. Mike is angry about the subject and often has tunnel vision about reporting these attacks to the police. Luckily, Ryan has experience working with survivors and is able to explain that there is no hard and fast rule on what to do after an assault, only that it is up to the survivor to decide how to handle the situation.  Synopsis: Today, we are covering Speak: The Graphic Novel by Laurie Halse Anderson, Illustrated by Emily Carroll  "Speak up for yourself―we want to know what you have to say." From the first moment of her freshman year at Merryweather High, Melinda knows this is a big fat lie, part of the nonsense of high school. She is friendless―an outcast―because she busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops, so now nobody will talk to her, let alone listen to her. Through her work on an art project, she is finally able to face what really happened that night: She was raped by an upperclassman, a guy who still attends Merryweather and is still a threat to her.  Survivor Resources: RAINN (Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network)  NSVRC (National Sexual Violence Resource Center) SurvJustice End Rape On Campus Find Us: Mental Health Podcast | Pop Psych 101 We have a Blog!  #28 - Autism & Caretaking in Rain Man (Movie) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:58:12

After a short conversation about the "Top Ten Happiest Countries In The World", Mike and Ryan breakdown the portrayal of Autism in the 1988 classic, Rain Man.  This is an important subject to Ryan, because he deals with patients who are caretakers, and he's seen firsthand the frustrations that can pile up. Mike has huge opinions about the character Charlie Babbitt, going as far to say that ,Charlie, is his most hated character in cinematic history. Not too far off, is Ryan with a questionable rating for the portrayal of Autism in this film.  Synopsis: When car dealer Charlie Babbitt (Tom Cruise) learns that his estranged father has died, he returns home to Cincinnati, where he discovers that he has an autistic older brother named Raymond (Dustin Hoffman) and that his father's $3 million fortune is being left to the mental institution in which Raymond lives. Motivated by his father's money, Charlie checks Raymond out of the facility in order to return with him to Los Angeles. The brothers' cross-country trip ends up changing both their lives.  Find Us: Mental Health Podcast | Pop Psych 101 We have a Blog! Ryan always had a Blog!  #27 - Social Anxiety & Anger in Punch Drunk Love (Movie) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:10:14

Mike embarrasses him self with an impersonation of Adam Sandler. The guys give a little background into how they pick their episodes and encourage anyone to join their mental health support group if they'd like to help pick new episodes.  Ryan and Mike go deep into the motivations behind Barry Egan's anger and social anxiety issues, which they believe have a lot to do with his upbringing, and especially the treatment he receives from his 7 sisters. Ryan gives us some examples of ways to deal with social anxiety including exposure therapy. Synopsis: Today we are covering the 2002 film, Punch Drunk. Starring Adam Sandler as Barry Egan, Emily Watson as Lena Leonard, and Phillip seymour Hoffman as Dean Trumbell or Mattress Man.   Although susceptible to violent outbursts, bathroom supply business owner Barry Egan (Adam Sandler) is a timid and shy man by disposition, leading a lonely, uneventful life -- partly due to the constant berating he suffers from his seven sisters. However, several events transpire that shake up Egan's mundane existence, one of which is falling in love with one sister's co-worker, Lena Leonard (Emily Watson). But the romance is threatened when Egan falls victim to an extortionist.  Find Us: Mental Health Podcast | Pop Psych 101 We have a Blog! Ryan always had a Blog!  #26 - The Therapeutic Relationship in Good Will Hunting (Movie) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:06:57

Mike embarrasses him self with an impersonation of Robin Williams. It's very very bad. Ryan and Mike talk about Rapper Big Sean, and the backlash he has received for making his mental health public. The guy opine that we should start by believing someone as our first reaction, and rushing to judge someone is the opposite of where we should be headed.  The breakdown of Good Will Hunting gets interesting as Ryan and Mike's opinion on the portrayal of the Therapist, Sean, slightly differs. Mike longs for a more personal relationship with his Therapist, while Ryan notes the importance of the professional relationship and what the goals of Therapy are.  Synopsis: Will Hunting (Matt Damon) has a genius-level IQ but chooses to work as a janitor at MIT. When he solves a difficult graduate-level math problem, his talents are discovered by Professor Gerald Lambeau (Stellan Skarsgard), who decides to help the misguided youth reach his potential. When Will is arrested for attacking a police officer, Professor Lambeau makes a deal to get leniency for him if he will get treatment from therapist Sean Maguire (Robin Williams).  #25 - Intrusive Thoughts in Turtles All The Way Down by John Green (Book) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:55:18

After Mike does a terrible impersonation of an angsty teenager, Ryan and Mike acknowledge that the theme of this book hits close to home for the both of them. They give us a heads up that the format of the show will be a little different, and they won't be doing a lighter 2nd half; there's too much to discuss about this spot on portrayal of intrusive thinking and OCD ( Obsessive Compulsive Disorder ). They talk about the way Aza's obsessive thoughts are interrupting her daily life, and how she and those around her react to that. We get some further insight into Mike's battle with Depression and Bipolar Disorder, and the central reasons he attends Therapy on a continuing basis. We also find out that a whopping 94% of the US population report intrusive thoughts, and Ryan, even as a Therapist, is no exception. Synopsis: Sixteen-year-old Aza never intended to pursue the mystery of fugitive billionaire Russell Pickett, but there’s a hundred-thousand-dollar reward at stake and her Best and Most Fearless Friend, Daisy, is eager to investigate. So together, they navigate the short distance and broad divides that separate them from Russell Pickett’s son, Davis.  Aza is trying. She is trying to be a good daughter, a good friend, a good student, and maybe even a good detective, while also living within the ever-tightening spiral of her own thoughts.  Buy Turtles All The Way Down by John Green Find Us: Mental Health Podcast | Pop Psych 101 We have a Blog! Mike and Ryan offer opinions on the glorification of serial killers in pop culture. They look at psychopathy and sociopathy through the lens of Netlfix's Mindhunter and strive to breakdown the how and why for people with Anti Social Personality Disorder. Mike and Ryan end up in a debate about whether or not, Holden Ford, is a sociopath.  Synopsis: Today, we are covering The Netflix series, Mindhunter. Based on the real-life work of former FBI Agent John Douglas. Starring Jonathan Groff as Holden Ford, Holt McCallany as Bill Tench and Anna Torv as Dr Wendy Carr  Set in the late 1970’s, Holden Ford, a hostage negotiator for the FBI, is put out to pasture and assigned the Job of teaching Cops around the country about criminal motive, with agent Bill Tench.  #23 - Identity & Shame in Hannah Gadsby's Nanette (Netflix Stand-Up Comedy Special) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:57:10

Ryan and Mike pause a moment to acknowledge that they are in fact straight white males, and being so, have a limited and possibly narrow perspective on this particular subject. They hope their perspectives as a Therapist and a mental health advocate can offer something to the conversation. Inspired by this raw and real performance by Hannah Gadsby, Ryan and Mike look at the theme of identity; who we see ourselves as--and are we ok with how others see us? The other theme that strikes them is shame as a result of our feeling of identity. Hannah, gives us a first hand, and very real view into these themes, and like all the issues and themes on Pop Psych 101 they need understanding. Ryan, offers up some embarrassing moments from his childhood that helped shape him into the man he grew to be. Mike talk about goobers. Synopsis: In the 2018 Netflix comedy special Nanette, comedian Hannah Gadsby starts out her set with fairly standard jokes about coming out as a lesbian and what it was like for her growing up in Tasmania.  She shares important lessons we can learn from art history and whether or not creativity means you must suffer. Over the course of her special however, she begins to acknowledge that these self deprecating jokes are insufficient in letting her tell and fully take care of her story. She shares the stark reality of what it was like for her in coming out and how she was treated and ultimately abused several times over the course of her life, just for being herself.  She challenges the audience to sit with their own tension and to not let anger or laughter cover it up. As a result, Hannah admits she needs to quit comedy as it doesn't allow her to fully embrace and deal with her trauma. Find Us: Mental Health Podcast | Pop Psych 101 We have a Blog!
