A native Californian, Cynthia Garrett received her graduate degree in Law from The University of Southern California Law School. Concurrently, she studied comparative law at the prestigious Oxford University in England. As a television personality, Cynthia launched her career with MTV Networks and became the face of sister channel VH1, hosting everything from LIVE events and awards shows, including the GRAMMYS, BILLBOARD AWARDS, EMMYS, VMA’s, and DIVAS LIVE, to self-titled specials and multiple series and broadcasts centered around her unique hosting and interviewing skills. Notably, she significantly shaped & hosted VH1’s emergence onto the scene as a channel in its own right with shows of importance like ‘VH1’s Women First’ a series that profiled significant women in the music industry worldwide. She went on to make history as host of LATER w/ Cynthia Garrett for NBC Network making her the first woman of color to ever host a network late night show! Up for Emmy consideration multiple times by NBC for her interviews with everyone from singers to actors to filmmakers and politicians, she has amassed a body of work, too large to mention in short form. Cynthia has been the face & personality for daytime talk-shows like SONY Studios popular women’s daytime panel LIFE & STYLE, primetime series such as the CW Network’s CROWNED, HBO’s THE BUZZ featuring Cynthia Garrett, TV GUIDE Channel’s HOLLYWOOD INSIDER, as well as major red carpet events like the OSCARS for ABC Network. While hosting later and under contract to NBC, Cynthia also enjoyed much success sitting in with Regis Philbin on LIVE. In her 20-year career Cynthia has also made a mark as an actress in FEATURE FILMS, a writer for national publications and newspapers like IN STYLE MAGAZINE where she wrote a monthly column to become their first ever celebrity journalist, NICHE MEDIA’s LA CONFIDENTIAL where her LIFESTYLE column became synonymous with what’s in and what’s not in places to eat, play, and sleep around the globe, and the faith based LA FOCUS, which featured her weekly column THROUGH THE STORM profiling how people get through life’s greatest challenges by relying on faith. I started out life wanting to be a teacher, (and in between a bunch of other things, like an architect and a veterinarian and, for a brief time, a nun) then an actress, then a theatre director (when I was never cast in the parts I wanted.) Theatre was my life, as they say; I thought it was my calling. After studying English and Drama at Vassar College, I was accepted in the Theatre Directing MFA program at Columbia University where I soon discovered that the New York theatre world was not for me. I worked as an Entertainment Director in Germany for the US Army, fell in love, got married, and moved to Pennsylvania, to the small town of Chambersburg, which had more cows than people at the time. I met a woman who wrote romance novels for a living, and I thought that sounded like a fun job. My romance novel turned into a twenty-year project, “The Hammer of God,” about Charles Martel and the Battle of Tours. What started as a love story turned into more of a war story. Isn’t that always the case? When helpful book editors told me I needed to write something shorter and more contemporary, I wrote “Avalon”, a certified Beach Book. It’s about my favorite beach town, Avalon, New Jersey. Switching genres is the kiss of death in the publishing world, but I switched once again, to YA Supernatural/Speculative fiction with the “Forlorn” series. And then I had the opportunity to co-write the middle-grade fantasy series “The Prince Warriors” with Priscilla Shirer. God is at the heart of everything I write, though my desire is to reach beyond the faith-based audience to those who struggle with faith in the world that dismisses God as irrelevant or unnecessary.
