This is what I worked out from Etta Baker's 2-finger playing. The tuning is dDF#AD capoed up two frets to E.
tried a roundpeak version of this tune, that I've learned from Tom Collins. Played of my Enoch Tradesman fretless. Tuning is somewhere around A.
Instramental
The banjo is tuned aEAC#E, is derived from Burl Hammons' fiddling and has three Galax licks in the 1st part. The approach, to the two consecutive thumbs on the 5th string, happens in three different ways. The first is a roll across the strings, the second is a hammer on the 1st string to the 4th fret and the last is comes after a single strike on the 1st string.

Learned from the playing of Burl Hammons. f#DABE
From my album, Casey Joe Abair & Hunter Robertson: "If You Want to Go to Sleep, Go to Bed" (Yodel-Ay-Hee 074). The Devil's Dream as Hobart Smith called it, appropriately enough. It's a doozy. ‘John Brown's Dream’, ‘Little Rabbit’, ‘Herve Brown's Dream’ and ‘Pretty Little Miss’ are other names it goes by. Fiddle: AEAE, Banjo: aEAC#E (we're both tuned low, all the tunings I give here are relative). <br> <br> <div style='width:225px; height:120px; margin:0; padding:0; border:0; background-image:url(http://www.cdbaby.com/Images/Links/Black-Buy_Album_100px_horz.png);'><a href='http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/caseyjoeabairhunterrobertson' style='display:block; padding:10px 10px 10px 115px; margin:0; border:0;'><img src='http://CDBaby.name/c/a/caseyjoeabairhunterrobertson_small.jpg' width=颼' height=颼' alt='Casey Joe Abair & Hunter Robertson: If You Want to Go to Sleep, Go to Bed' style='border:0; margin:0; padding:0;' /></a></div>
I was talkin' to divingsailingdoug about this, and reckoned I didn't know if I could play it or not. So this is my preliminary effort to play it. It's fun.
