Praying & Reading the Bible with Diana Vallette | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 36:20

I got to have the privilege to talk to this awesome christian chick, Diana. She's over on Instagram (here) and her website at DianaDivulges.com.  Diana Valette is a catholic convert who, until about 5 years ago was a non-believer who thought Christians were either a) dumb as rocks or b) lying about believing. She talks about why it’s OK to have those types of thoughts where you question faith and God and what you can do with them. She's really big on truth telling, showing the mess and meeting people exactly where they are and it is SO refreshing. She loves red wine and Mexican food (and Cuban food and ALL the food). Say's she's a mediocre mom but she's clearly rocking the craziness that is mom life with 4 kids, their oldest is 8 and she has one on the way. She's kinda a big deal - Scott Hahn once complimented her on her writing and she's actually hung out with Jenn Fullwiler before. You can reach her at DianaDivulges on Instagram, or via her website DianaDivulges.com   Don't forget to hook up with me and some other mamas!  "We Were on a BREAK!" - Phone Breakups | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 18:49

Here's the wedding photographer rant I talk about in the beginning of the show. Image Credit: Thomas Stewart Photography (view article here) Do your kids find your phone and say "here's your phone mommy?" Real eye opener - my kids probably think that my phone is a part of my being. And that brought some tears to my eyes. How often do we do that??? We take all the pictures to post on social media but we aren't actually PRESENT in the moment! Here's your big swift kick in the butt... grab your phone. Settings > Battery > Scroll down to see last 24 hours or last 7 days. It will show the activity base don% of battery usage, tap "show activity" and it will switch from the % to showing you in actual time during your day/week how much time you've spent in each app. Add up all the time you spend in your social media apps. Shocking, right? Even if you're good and only are on your phone an hour a day... in 7 days you've spent 7 hours. And in another 17 days you've spent an ENTIRE DAY on your phone in social media apps. Think about the time you could be spent doing the things you say you don't have time for - bible, church, working out, reading to your kids, keeping the house clean. If you read to your kids one hour a day instead of being on social media with virtual friends in one year you would have spent 15 days reading to your kids! And over a course of their time in your home you would have spent a total of about 9 months worth of hours reading to your kids before they graduate and move out. Now, if you put that in terms of social media if you ARENT spending that time intentionally then you're spending NINE MONTHS OF YOUR CHILDRENS LIVES on social media. I am NOT condemning anyone... this is because I've got a problem with it. I'll admit it. It's not a shiny perfect person thing to say... but the first step to making a change is admitting you've got a problem. Now, I've done this before. I get real good and intentional but then I get lonely, or bored, or tired and mindlessly scrolling becomes more and more of a habit - but these are the times we need a swift kick in the butt... so here we go! Practical ways to cut back the phone time and simplifying your phone usage. Settings that help Spend some time simplifying the social media and removing excess apps deleting people that you don't associate with anymore or don't even really know. Unroll. me - app/website Organzie your icons into folders - if you have to seek out an app to find it it will make you less likely to open it so often. It's some sort of psychology. Most of our scrolling and app usage is mindless, our thumb knows where that Instagram icon is... and it's a magnet! Turn off all of the notifications this one I'm a huge fan of. Think about it, we're in a world right now where the people who are the most important to us (in the moment or completely all the time) are pushed to the side because of a noise on our phone. With the notifications (noises, badges, banners) all turned off you won't be notified every time you get an email (which is probably spam) or a text (which might just be an emoji). I don't know about you but my ability to pick up the phone read the text and stop there went out the window a around the iPhone 3. I pick it up, check the meaningless text, then get on Instagram, Facebook , check my email, get lost on google. Then all of the sudden I've wasted 15 min of my life and told my kids to "hold on" 6 time.. because I'm mother of the year. Use Siri or Alexa more regularly - to ask questions instead of searching google or your calendar which then can spiral into a scroll fest. Keep it in silent Turn on grey scale in accessibility, display accommodations, filters. Do not disturb from 2 hours before bed to 2 hours after your normal wake time. Make a no phones in the bedroom, bathroom or kitchen rule. Get an ACTUAL alarm clock so you can charge your phone in another room. Carry a book or magazine with you Use a real to do list, or create your morning routine and vow to not pick up the phone until you're done with the routine or daily tasks. Set a reading goal. Pick up a hobby that is kinda mindless - coloring, knitting, crocheting, cross stitch (which I can never figure out how to do) Apps to help Download an app called "Checky" that will log how many times you pick up your phone. Set a goal to decrease by 5 every week until you're ok with how much you pick it up. Set goals for usage and check in regularly. Check in every night on how you've done. Download an app like "moment" - it tracks usage but also you can set time limits on each app.   Is this something you struggle with? I think in this age we all do, but its great to be able to step away and take a break from it all and be more present in the moment!   Let me know if you take a refreshing social media break!   Don't forget to hook up with me and some other mamas!  Favorites for February 2019 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 15:46

#1 Trello! It's a project/life management tool that is basically a virtual cork board, with lists, due dates, you can drag and drop, assign to other people, etc. It's amazing! Here's my referral link! #2 Sink full of water: I'm such a weirdo about my sink but I keep the left side plugged up and with clean/soapy water all day. This way I can keep a microfiber rag in there and wipe up any messes, sticky hands, anything through out the day. Think of it like a stationary cleaning bucket. If the water starts to get a big yucky, I just empty it and fill it back up with some clean stuff. I do NOT allow dishes in this soapy water because then the water would be gross! Some of my favorite essential oils to put in there are from Eden's garden. Honestly, I've got a lot so now I just go to what smells good and I have on hand but when I go to get another order, my favorite smell for my sink is the *Cleaning Blend*. It's all lemony and happy and clean smelling. A few drops of that plus some dawn dish soap and I can clean everything up in a jiffy. #3 Reading - 50 books reading challenge, GoodReads.  Confession! Wait! Don't skip this one! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 32:29

Decluttering is my favorite non-Jesus-y thing to talk about, the Eucharist is my #1 favorite of all time but man, confession is a very, very close second! We're going to talk about all the things some people don't ask. The ideas we don't want to face and then the practical ways to open your beautiful gift God has given us! Here we go! Why do you confess sins to a priest? Why not go right to God? Let's talk about the fall of sin. Genesis says God tells Adam and eve if they eat of the fruit they would surely die. But, they didn't die. They ran and hid. So, was he talking about physical death? The first breath of life breathed into man made him a SOUL exulted above all animals. We weren't just given natural life - we were given a natural and a spiritual divine life. So just as cancer can take of our natural life our mortal sin KILLS our supernatural life. The day they ate of it they committed mortal sin and they died in their divine life. When was the next time that Humans had the great rush of God's spirit given to all?? Pentecost... baptism! Please, first thing - go right to God. Holy Spirit gives us direct access to God - repent of them immediately. But were also called to go to the priest. The role of the priest all the way from the old testament to the new was as an intercessor between man and God. Jesus is ULTIMATELY the one who make it possible for us to have access to God, therefore He is the ultimate and only mediator between humans and God BUT... we intercession on each others behalf constantly. God uses people as the MEDIATOR between him and them when they need it. Sin is a time of need. In the old testament priests were given the roll as symbolic mediator between God and Man They would offer up sacrifices for the behalf of sins but it wasn't enough, an animals death wasn't enough for reparation of SINS... until Jesus' sacrifice that our sins were forgiven because the sacrifice was ACTUALLY worthy of the awful that is/was our sins. Then... in the new testament priests serve a more similar role but with even more power. John Ch 20 - Breathes on them, power of the holy spirit and gives them the POWER to forgive sins. It's powerful because not only is Jesus giving a whole new dimension to the priesthood that has been since the OT but he give the apostles the ABILITY to forgive sins. This reveals that Jesus' desire that priesthood to extend his true and complete full forgiveness to those who come in repentance. James Ch 5 - Prayer of forgiveness is a role given to the priest. "Confess your sins to each other" as in any other humans. James Ch 5, the priests were able to give a prayer and the forgiveness was given. Priests don't have the POWER to forgive sins, jesus has given them the authority. Jesus uses THEM to shower is forgiveness. Jeuss is using the priest as his service. Just like God will give you any gifts, you minister those by God's grace through you. In sending his Son with our flesh, he shows he wants to encounter us through a direct contact that passes through the signs and language of our human condition. So, ARE you actually going to God? Jesus gives us a gift of reconciliation. So, if you go straight to God... your sins are for given but have you been received back into the community? Maybe no, it's just between you and God? You've still created worldly damage as well as spiritual. In baptism, I don't have to do anything and my sins are forgiven. It's beautiful! But, let's be honest, it's harder to go to confession because we don't like having to admit our faults out loud. The more we need confession the less we want to do it. Confession is not a place for shame, defeat, ... it is a place of VICTORY! -------------------- Now let's walk through how you actually get yourself into the confessional!  First tip, sit face to face with the priest. It may be hard to do first time but give it a few tries and you'll feel a human contact aspect that the screen doesn't allow us. Forgive me father for I have sinned- Have him walk through the confession with you Act of contritionMy God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy. PenanceThe priest normally assigns us a penance (for example, prayer, fasting or other types of self-denial, sacrifices, almsgiving, spiritual or corporal works of mercy, or service of neighbor) as medicine to begin to repair the damage caused by sin, but this penance is light in comparison to the infinite harm our sins have done in bringing about Christ’s death. So we should voluntarily do penance to seek, with God’s help, to expiate our sins and repair that damage (CCC 1460) Sins are forgiven but our souls still need to be healed. What Is Required for it to be a *good* confession?Three things are required of a penitent in order to receive the sacrament worthily: 1) A person must be really, actually sorry for their sins.2) One must confess those sins fully, in kind and in number.3) One must be willing to do penance and make amends for his sins Now, why does the church want to butt into your business with all this confessing stuff anyways? I mean, its 100% confidential. You COULD say it to God but we need that physical help to break down that spiritual and physical barrier. We need this because the Church doesn't want us screwing ourselves over, spiritually. I spoke about it in episode 14 on the Eucharist but if you try to make communion with God when you're not in the right state of accepting his Graces then you could be bringing judgement upon yourself. And the way the church makes sure you're in a state of grace is by confession. Now, no one would ever know if you're in a state of Grace with God but GOD knows. And he's the only one who matters in this whole matter, right? So, the church makes some tiny, measly (in the scheme of life) requirements for being a *practicing* member of the Church. 1. Go to mass on all holy day's and Sundays. This is only like 56 days a year. 52 Sundays + Christmas, Easter, Assumption, All Saints Day. UNLESS you are dispensed from having to go because of illness, caring for someone else who is ill, etc. Basically the sin is when you could have gone but choose not to. Or forgot to because you're a hot mess.2. Receive communion once a year, preferably during Lent. (again, listen to episode 014 for why you want/need the Eucharist so... much... more frequently than just once a year!)3. Go to confession once a year, preferably during Lent. Now, 2 and 3 go hand in hand. You'll probably need to go to confession before you receive communion the 1x a year because we're ALL bound to sin within 365, am I right? No matter how hard you try, it's gonna happen. That's it... but it's the going above and beyond. The making of the effort in your relationship with God that really will deepen the relationship... So, there are special gifts God gives everyone but some surefire way to open yourself up to the reception of the gifts is by partaking in communion and confession regularly. They're great for your soul, all the earthly ways that therapy and friendly and physical communion are BUT they give you the special graces by God to help you combat those sinful things you confessed.   Go sign up for this free, beautiful booklet I created to help you in your confession journey! www.holyhotmessmom.com/iconfess   Don't forget to hook up with me and some other mamas!  Tips for Keeping Your House Clean in Under 30 Minutes a Day | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 29:35

This is a real simple, practical one that you might be like, "duh, Heather - I've been keeping my house clean and perfect forever. You seriously couldn't do it?".. uh, NOPE. I was broken and in survival mode for the first 3.5 years of motherhood - but ya'll, I'm not here to preach this shiny perfect mom thing to you I'm just here to tell you that you don't have to LIVE in survival mode. You can love the heck out of your kids, have hobbies, and somehow manage to stay on top of the house while also taking care of yourself and getting sleep. It's possible!  In a nutshell these tips are: 1. Declutter : if you spend ALL your time picking up objects and shuffling them around your house you will never, ever be able to actually get to cleaning said house. But once you rid the clutter - you suddenly free up so much time that you're able to *gasp* do one load of laundry a day, or *double gasp* clean the toilets! It's possible! If you need a jumpstart to your decluttering you can head over to my 14 day #DeclutterAllTheThings challenge on my blog! www.holyhotmessmom.com/declutter 2. "Go Home" basket central to the house : this is just a simple, sturdy, decently big-ish basket I keep in a central location in the house. It allows me to not run around shuffling our necessary clutter that makes its way into my living areas, I just throw all these things in that basket and either at the end of the day or when the basket is full I spend a solid 5 min running and putting those things away, one room at a time. It's such a time saver. 3. Sink full of water: I'm such a weirdo about my sink but I keep the left side plugged up and with clean/soapy water all day. 4. Keep cleaning items where you need them. It doesn't need to be elaborate but if you keep common things where you need them its so much easier to grab them and clean it when you see it.- Bathroom - toilet brush, toilet bowl cleaner, bleach, cleaning wipes, reusable window/glass rag, foam glass cleaner, and my handy-dandy wand filled with 1/2 dish soap and 1/2 vinegar.- Kitchen - microfiber rags, glass cook top cleaner, sponge, dish soap, cleaning wipes, electronics cleaner, reusable window/glass rag, foam glass cleaner. 5. Tag some cleaning to bits of your day- After going to the bathroom first thing in the AM, check the toilet. If it's gross, give it a squirt of cleaner and swish the bowl brush around. Let that sit while you go brush your teeth and wash your face. After doing your morning hygiene stuff, grab that dish wand and spot clean the sink/counter area. Let it sit for a moment while you head back to the toilet and spot clean with some disposable wipes (I use Clorox, I'm all about the natural life except when it comes to the toilet, no thanks. Give me the industrial toxic cleaning stuff!). Done with the toilet, head back to the sink and use the rag you used to wash your face to wipe up the soapy-ness and then throw that rag right into your laundry for the day. - Always make your bed right after getting dressed. Then exit the bedroom and start the wash with your bathroom rag, and dirty PJs from the night before. - Washing/putting away dishes after every meal, wiping counters after every meal. (More examples in the episode!) 6. One load of laundry a day: Some people save laundry for 1 day of the week. I used to be one of those people but I realized that doing so meant that laundry consumed my entire day. I could get nothing else done. On a Sunday, that is the LAST thing I want to be doing is 8 loads of laundry so about 2 years ago we started doing (about) 1 load a day. I commit to washing, drying and folding it as well as putting it away before I head to bed. That's it - bathrooms, kitchen, laundry and floors. Easy peasy and your house looks clean and put together most of the time and when it's not, it will only take minutes to whip it back into shape.   Don't forget to hook up with me and some other mamas!  Making Some Kick Butt Morning & Evening Routines | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 15:55

In this episode we're tackling the topic of morning & evening routines. Why you need them, how you'll benefit, what makes them work and HOW to go about making your routines in your day to day life. Why they're so needed- Less decision fatigue- Less scrambling- Less forgetting stuff - Less waking up to a to do list What really makes them work- Tagging them to things in your day (like brushing your teeth, getting dressed, finishing a meal)- keeping to one room at a time How to go about making them- List what you NEED to have done before you leave the house every morning (diaper bag, gym bag, getting dressed, etc)- List what you DON'T want to wake up to (dirty dishes, a dirty floor, stuff all over the counters, laundry to fold, clothes to pick out, etc) Figure out how those things fit into your already existing routine- Tag them to items in the same room (do all the days dishes and wipe counters while you're waiting on dinner to finish cooking), make your bed right after you get dressed every day. This helps you to not run around so much- Tag them to things that always happen (brushing teeth and then swiping the toilet clean), putting dinner away then wiping the table, vacuuming while hubby gives kids a bath.-Figure out the nightly routine first because that's the most important.- Work back wards logically. For us, we want to be checked out by 7 PM so we work backwards to make that our goal. It means hustling from 5-7pm but once 7 hits we have no household responsibilities! Try to implement one-2 extra things a week or every 2 weeks until you've got a solid routine.   Don't forget to hook up with me and some other mamas!  Time Management As A Homemaker, Wife & Mama | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 09:56

In this episode we're chatting about all things time management as a wife and mom and homemaker.  You can download the blank time blocking sheet at www.holyhotmessmom.com/timeblock Basically, you're going to take this blank sundy-saturday spreadsheet with the hours of 6am to 10pm marked down. You're going to start with your essentials. For us I always put in meal times, nap times, wake times, and the normal mass time we usually go to. Next put in your weekly expectations that have a legit standard time. For us that is our homeschool co op from 830am-1230pm on Thursdays. It takes us about 30 minutes to get to the co op before and after so I add in that travel time as well. Next i'll add in the things that should be done each day but that could flex if I needed them to. Monday, Tues, Wed, and Friday is homeschooling LJ while the other kids nap in the afternoon. But also, Crossfit at noon monday, tues, wed, friday and 10am on saturday. I also put in 30 min travel time before and after so I'm aware. That is what my week looks like right now. This I like to color code and print out. I use a happy planner so I can print it out on cardstock and use the happy planner hole punches to put it right in the front of my planner. When I'm scheduling doctors visits, etc I can glance at my white space on the planner and know when would be the most ideal time to schedule something. This is also wonderful for when you're looking to schedule a play date, or add a new activity to your schedule or, if you need to say "no" to something. SAYING NO IS OK!! I've added this time blocking guide to my blog so you can download it, or open it in google documents, save as a copy so you can modify it and create your own weekly time block. You can head over to holyhotmessmom.com/timeblock to get the time blocking sheet and workbook. When you create this visual you can see the days of the week that you are super busy and you need to make sure you've got either a fast meal or a crock pot meal for that day. You can see when the laundry needs to be fit in, or maybe even days that are too crazy and you need to back some things off of the schedule. It's a great tool to have and one that you can even plan to reevaluate every month or so. right now, I've got babies who have ever changing nap schedules so we're updating our time block pretty frequently. I have a time block sheet that actually has the schedules for all of us - me, the two oldest kids, the twins, and my husband. It helps me know when I can realistically prep dinner during each day, the days that maybe need to be prepped ahead of time, things like that. Don't forget to hook up with me and some other mamas! In this edition of "why do all of my stories have to do with human waste and why is it always ME having to deal with it" we're getting raw with a story I recorded within hours of it happening. I was definitely still salty about it. Also, my husband AND cat made an appearance and it was just adding to the hot mess so I didn't even edit it out. Enjoy!  How to Pray When Your Faith is Iffy | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 16:38

In this episode we're chatting about how sometimes it's hard to feel like God is there. And if He is there, maybe he's not there for US. We've all been in that spiritual drought right? Faith when we're younger and talking to God is just "please do this and please do that" really doesn't cut it when you're a grown up. You need a relationship - after all, that's the whole point of salvation. A relationship with God. But how can you have a relationship if you don't even know how to communicate?? Prayer is so much more than reciting familiar prayers from mass, it's TWO way communication and it's something that has to be practiced all the time. Just like you'll loose touch with a friend if you don't put effort into checking in, the same goes for God! I dive into some simple, easy, heart opening prayer steps taken from St. Ignatius of Loyola's method of spirituality. If you're thinking your prayer life needs a reboot (and I mean, who's doesn't??) then head over to www.holyhotmessmom.com/fillyourcup to get my free 10 day faith filling challenge and workbook.   As always come find me over at Instagram @HolyHotMessMOm and join our mama group on Facebook Holy Hot Mess Mamas

 Declutter 101 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 26:33

On my blog/ministry I help moms (really just women in general) declutter in a non-overwhelming, sanity-taking-back way. After seeing a few posts in a Catholic Mama’s FB Group about needing to clear clutter. I thought, what better time than now to post my general *tips*, tricks, rules and guidelines to get your decluttering butt in gear. 1) Make sure you know what you're going to do with the stuff you discard. Where exactly are you donating to? Make sure trash and donation items go OUT of the house immediately after your purge. The longer they sit in bags or boxes in the house, the longer time you give it to creep back into your clean home. 2) Go into each room with 4 bins/buckets/boxes/bags - one for recycling, one for trash, and one for donations and one for stuff that doesn't belong in that room but needs to stay in your house just in its proper place. For the women who have a room full of stuff I suggest taking it ALL out to the driveway to sort - that way you’re only bringing back in your house the things that are essential! 3) Fight the urge to clean the room you are in during your declutter time. You are here to declutter, not deep clean. I repeat, YOU ARE HERE TO DECLUTTER NOT TO CLEAN. Once your whole house is decluttered, you'll have so much time to clean all the things because you won't be spending your precious time putting away all the things. 4) Only work on one room/space at a time. And don't leave that room until it's done. It is so easy to go from room to room putting clutter away that when the day is over, you've 1/2 done all the rooms and the whole house looks a mess. This is why that laundry basket helps! I suggest that any items that aren't being trashed, donated, or recycled and need to be put back in their proper homes go into a little bag or basket by the door of the room you are currently in. Once you're finished with decluttering that room, go put all the misplaced things back to their homes. Spend your entire set aside time decluttering that one room, not getting distracted by tons of other things needing to be put away. 5) Have FUN.. Put on some music and JAM girl. Everyone will know you're occupied and its great for the soul! Plus, getting rid of clutter is so freaking therapeutic I can't even explain it how awesome the feeling is. Do this on a weekend or day where you can do this alone, with minimal interruption. ⭐️⭐️ Now, once you're into the actual room you are going to declutter with your 4 containers ⭐️⭐️ Define what this room IS and IS NOT. I want to define some things that I don't consider part of different rooms for the sake of this post (which is also an upcoming Podcast Episode!).
